PORT TOWNSEND — Salish Snow Sports, a new ski and snowboard program for Jefferson County youths, is bringing the “Ski Bus” back for local students in Jefferson County school districts and learning backgrounds.
With affordable tiered tuition options, group lessons at Stevens Pass, and a “Family Bus” for parents and younger kids, the program makes winter recreation more accessible than ever for local youths.
Registration opened Monday. Adults who register for the family bus will pay a transportation fee, but will receive discounted lift tickets at a group rate.
The program is designed to support the health, confidence and well-being of local students during the weekend months, offering structured weekend opportunities for skiing and snowboarding at Stevens Pass.
“Winter can be an isolating time for young people in our rural communities,” said Jaime Jaynes, program coordinator for Salish Snow Sports. “We created this program to make winter recreation more accessible, while giving middle and high school students something positive to look forward to.”
The program is open to students in Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene school districts, as well as private and home-schooled children living in east Jefferson County. It runs for six weekends during peak winter months and includes professional instruction through the Stevens Pass Ski School.
The program does not yet have a scholarship fund but is welcoming donations and sponsorships from the community. The program’s goal is to raise $30,000 to provide subsidized support for more than half of its students. Soccer results
PORT ANGELES — Salazar Painting, Lincoln Park Grocery and High Energy Metals all improved their records to 2-0 in the Peninsula Fall Soccer League with a pair of wins Sunday.
High Energy Metals beat Los Primos 7-1. HEM got four goals from Nick Allen and three from Hector Orozco. Sauli Ruiz scored for Los Primos.
Salazar Painting beat Pura Vida 8-3. Salazar Painting’s Pablo Salazar scored four goals, while Luis Galvan had three goals and Jackson May one. Evan Cisneros scored two for Pura Vida.
Lincoln Park Grocery beat the Wilder FC 4-0, getting two goals from Zach Gray and one each from Isaiah Jindrich and Taryn Asmus.
The Bandidos also beat Windemere 3-2. Trevor Jones scored two goals for the Bandidos, while Balyn Rose scored one. Ryan Ochos scored both of Windemere’s goals.
Campground closures
OLYMPIA — Seasonal closures of U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the Olympic National Forest has begun, though several campgrounds will remain open to the end of October.
Closing next week are the Dungeness Forks and Collins campgrounds in the Hood Canal area.
Already closed in the Hood Canal area are the Falls View, Big Creek, Brown Creek and Lebar Horse campgrounds. Already closed in the Lake Quinault area are the Falls Creek, Gatton and Campbell Tree Grove campgrounds. The Klahowya campground in the Forks area is already closed.
Closing on Oct. 27 are the Seal Rock, Hamma Hamma and Lena Creek campgrounds in the Hood Canal area. The Willaby campground in the Lake Quinault area closes Oct. 31, and the Littleton Horse Camp campground closes on Dec. 1.
