WEEKEND: First of two November contra dances Saturday night

PORT ANGELES — November will bring two contra dances to town, and everyone is invited to join in these all-ages events, regardless of previous dance experience.

First, this Saturday night at 7:30, an introductory contra-dance workshop will get moving at the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road.

At 8 p.m. the live music will kick in: fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld of Seattle will join with guitarist Forrest Gibson for dancing till 11 p.m.

Admission is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $3 for those 17 and younger.

As with all contra dances, there’s a caller, and this Saturday that’s Marlin Prowell of Bellingham, a seasoned dancer who also organizes dances in his town as well as a summer country dance camp on Orcas Island (www.bellinghamcountrydance.org).

November’s next dance is an extra one at the Black Diamond Community Hall on Monday, Nov. 18.

Perpetual E Motion, a nationally known band, will be back in Port Angeles, and since that’s a school night, it will play from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

George Marshall will be the caller, with admission at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and teens and $5 for children.

To find out more about the contra dances held each month at the Black Diamond hall, which is about 3 miles south of town via Pine Street, phone 360-457-5667 or visit www.BlackDiamondDance.org.
