Vandals damage outside pieces at fine arts center

PORT ANGELES –Vandals have taken liberties with three exterior art installations around the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, a bench meant to look like an eyelash was damaged.

On Tuesday, the Port Angeles Police Department received a call that a monolith had been pushed over and an acrylic sculpture was damaged.

The sculptures and art pieces are in the Webster’s Woods Art Park which surrounds the center. The park has 112 pieces in it, said Executive Director Jake Senuik.

He estimated the damage to the bench — “Eyelash Bench” by Sheila Klein of Bow — at about $1,000.

The damage was reported to police on July 15, but it is unknown when the damage occurred.

The acrylic sculpture “Linger (Sight, Light)” by Carolyn Law of Seattle casts colored light on nearby vegetation. It sustained about $100 worth of damage.

The monolith — “Eroding Menhir” by Kirk McLean of Arlington — was remounted with the help of a city backhoe and was not damaged, Senuik said.

But the damage isn’t about money, he said.

“All the creative effort put into these pieces, people appreciate that, it inspires them, and this is the total opposite,” Senuik said.

“It’s sort of an assault on the artists.”
