Two structure fires extinguished last week in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Residents escaped unharmed from two structure fires last week, Clallam 2 Fire Rescue Chief Jake Patterson said.

A recreational vehicle was destroyed in a blaze early Friday but firefighters were able to ensure the primary residence suffered only light damage, according to Patterson.

Flames engulfed the RV in the Hunt Road blaze to which firefighters were called at 12:42 a.m. Friday. The fire spread to the attic of the adjacent garage and sent smoke and heat through the eaves of the primary residence, Patterson said.

The fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes, he said, but crews remained until about 3:23 a.m. to quell hot spots.

The cause is believed to be accidental, Patterson said.

The occupant of a house on Verns Lane in the Mount Pleasant area and her two dogs escaped a Wednesday morning blaze thought to have been caused by combustibles too close to a heat source which spread from the cook-top to the rest of the kitchen.

The house suffered significant fire, heat and smoke damage to the kitchen and upper loft area, as well as smoke damage to the rest of the house, Patterson said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 8:50 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames.

The occupant said that at about 3 that morning, she smelled something burning and found a small cord smoldering as it lay across the stove top.

She put it out and returned to sleep but was awakened later to smoke in the house and evacuated.

In addition to the two structure fires, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue crews also took care of a vehicle fire, a fire alarm activation, one motor vehicle wreck and seven medical emergencies form Wednesday morning to Friday morning, Patterson said.

Clallam 2 Fire Rescue provides fire suppression and Advanced Life Support emergency medical service to 9,500 people over 85 square miles outside the city of Port Angeles serving the communities of Deer Park, Gales Addition, Mt. Pleasant Community, Black Diamond, Dry Creek and Lake Sutherland.
