SEQUIM — A new weight room is in the works for the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center, with the center’s board members looking favorably on a scaled-back proposal for a 4,500-square-foot addition that’s projected to cost just under $900,000.
The money will come from an equipment maintenance and replacement fund maintained by the park district that administers the recreation center.
The fund has been built up to about $1.5 million over the years, and SARC board member Bill Black said the plan is to keep about $500,000 in reserve for repairs and emergencies.
The design presented this week calls for a 38-foot by 120-foot wing to be added to the current building’s east side.
It would house all of the center’s weight room and cardiovascular equipment, which currently is divided among three rooms on two stories. The plan calls for additional parking spaces on the east side as well.

The board originally considered a building that was about 3,000 square feet larger — but the cost estimate came in at more than $1.3 million, so it was back to the drawing board.
“I think you’ve got it to our budget,” Black said Tuesday night after an architect went over the revised design.
“Not only have you got it there, but with a little bit to spare.”
