North Olympic Land Trust sets Earth Day Weekend

The North Olympic Land Trust wants to show people who are making a difference during its first Earth Day Weekend.

The land trust is a co-sponsor with Peninsula College of the college’s first film in its spring quarter Magic of Cinema film series.

The documentary “Home” will be shown at 7 tonight in the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Preceding the film, at 6 p.m., aerial photographers Dave Woodcock and Russ Mellon will show some of their images of the Olympic Peninsula.

Woodcock and Tim McNulty will sign copies of their new book, From the Air, Olympic Peninsula, which contains Woodcock’s photographs and McNulty’s essays.

McNulty is also Peninsula College’s Writer in Residence from Tuesday through Thursday.

After the film, Woodcock, Mellon and McNulty will lead a discussion.

“Home” is one of four environmental documentary films the college will show this spring.

On Saturday, cyclists will gather at 9 a.m. at Robin Hill County Park for a bike tour of five properties that the land trust protects permanently through conservation-easement legal agreements.

Participants — each bringing a bike, a sack lunch and water — will meet in the parking lot of the park between Port Angeles and Sequim off Dryke Road, one-quarter mile north of U.S. Highway 101, before taking off on the Discovery Trail for a ride that is six miles each way.

Cyclists will stop at properties owned by Jerry and Mary Schmidt, Steve Johnson, Cheryl Smith and Judy Winthrop, Ruth Jenkins and John Warrick, and Nancy McLaughlin.

Participants are asked to phone the land trust office at 360-417-1815 by 5 p.m. today, but riders can join at the last minute as well.

On Sunday, Ken and Sue Sweeney will give a tour of their sport horse farm from 10 a.m. to noon.

Parking is available at the farm near the end of Gellor Road, off Blue Mountain Road, on the south side of Highway 101.

All events are free.

More information about the land trust is available from www.nolt.org and 360-417-1815.
