NEWS BRIEFS: National Adoption Day is Thursday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County will celebrate National Adoption Day with two adoptions at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The adoptions, guests speakers and refreshments are planned at the Family Courtroom of the Superior Court in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St, Port Angeles.

Commissioner Brent Basden will preside over the adoptions.

The focus of the celebration will be the adoption of children from foster care, said Sherri Jones, adoption worker with the Department of Children, Youth & Families.

Two foster/adopt parents, Pastor Tim Hughes and Tiffinny Blore, will speak.

Statewide, more than 1,900 foster children are in need of a family, Jones said.

Some 200 foster children will gain one when they are adopted during National Adoption Day celebrations in courts and communities across the state. Jefferson County is not among those listed as having a celebration this year.

Food drive ongoing in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Wenner-Davis and Associates recently announced its fifth annual food drive for the Port Angeles Food Bank.

Donations of non-perishable foods can be dropped off from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through this month at Wenner-Davis’ offices, 102 E. First St.

According to a press release, the Port Angeles Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that provides approximately 20,000 pounds of food to families in need and individuals each month.

Popular items for donation include: spaghetti noodles and sauce, macaroni and cheese, rice, tuna fish, cereal, canned soups, stews and chili, ramen noodles, canned fruit, granola bars and cereal bars.

Toys for Tots tour

The Olympic Peninsula Bed and Breakfast Association will host open houses at eight bed and breakfasts from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 1.

The self-guided tour will benefit Toys for Tots. Admission is $10 or a new unwrapped toy.

Port Angeles stops include Sea Cliff Gardens, 397 Monterra Drive; Five SeaSuns, 1006 S. Lincoln St.; Domaine Madeleine, 146 Wildflower Lane; George Washington Inn, 939 Finn Hall Road and Colette’s,

339 Finn Hall Road.

Stops in Sequim are Lost Mountain Lodge, 303 Sunny View Drive, Green House Inn by the Bay, 630 Marine Drive and Ambiance, 774 Lost Mountain Lane.

Alzheimer walk fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — More than 100 people showed up in Port Angeles on Oct. 13 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The event, hosted by the Washington state chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, raised more than $25,000 for Alzheimer’s research and for care and support services for local families.

Mardell Xavier of Port Angeles was awarded the 2018 Donald Rentmeester Walk Hero Award, which is presented annually to someone who has made a significant impact on the event in Washington State.

The top fundraising team this year was the Soroptimist Inernational of Port Angeles, which raised over $2,500.

Donations for the event will be accepted through Dec. 31.
