PORT ANGELES — The family of the man shot and killed Sept. 20 in Sequim is planning to organize a memorial service for him in the next few months.
Police say Richard Ziegler, 59, was gunned down by Shawn Matthew Roe after Roe had shot and killed a U.S. Forest Service officer.
No formal funeral or memorial services will be planned through a funeral home, said Douglas Ticknor, the funeral director at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles, which handled the arrangements.
A fishing buff, Ziegler’s last will and testament included a wish to have his body cremated and the remains put in his tackle box, said his mother, Helene Ziegler, of Cambria, Calif.
Ziegler had lived in Los Osos, Calif., for about 25 years when he retired in May from his job as a corrections officer at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo.
He settled on 4 wooded acres off Jonrey Road above Sequim Bay, where he was living in a fifth-wheel trailer and building a home.
Authorities believe Roe killed Ziegler after shooting and killing U.S. Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks at the nearby Dungeness Forks campground.
Police said Roe had abandoned his van on a road near Ziegler’s property and stolen Ziegler’s white pickup truck after killing him while he was working on his new home.
Roe was later shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies outside the Longhouse Market & Deli in Blyn.
