LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Savor blackberries, melodies this week

THE BIG EVENT for this weekend is Joyce’s Wild Blackberry Festival, but it’s also the last weekend of music (for now) from Taylor Ackley, who is moving to New York to get his Master of Business Administration in music.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam with guest singers Rusty and Duke from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Today at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Chip Norris hosts the jam session from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ Today at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., the open-mic variety show begins at 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Front Street Alibi, 1605 E. Front St., the Port Angeles High School Class of 1989 reunion begins with a meet-and-greet, but at 9 p.m., Slacker, a band from Seattle, should get everyone dancing with their classic and modern rock music. Open to the public.

■ On Friday, the R&B Band with Rachael, Mick and Barry comes to Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

On Saturday, Taylor Ackley of Locos Only celebrates his last gig with some surprise local artists from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, there’s a jam session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by the Serendipity Band with special guests Rusty and Duke from High Country until 8 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and friends entertain from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Friday, Howly Slim and Sandy Summers re-create the energy of the folk clubs of the 1960s and ’70s with their original folk and Americana songs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Sarah Shea and Chez Jazz give their audiences vibrant vocal jazz from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Wednesday, Bill Volmut showcases original tunes and acoustic folk rock from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., Discovery Bay Pirates get you swinging your mugs with Irish pub songs and sea chanteys from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Testify plays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., the Old Sidekicks play their brand of country for the public to dance to from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No cover. Dinner is offered at 5 p.m. for a nominal charge.

■ On Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 E. Washington St., Gil Yslas entertains at the weekly Music on the Roof from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to the Stardust Big Band from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Friday, Chris Ward plays country music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, The Hitmen play 1960s, ’70s and ’80s hits from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, listen to the mellow tunes of Jim Hoffman from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Jeremy Pederson plays contemporary folk from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Friday at the Ajax Cafe, 21 N. Water St., Buzz Rogowski plays jazz and standards from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Mick and Barry play acoustic guitars with classic rock and folk tunes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 6 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ On Tuesdays at Sirens Pub, 823 Water St., there is a fiddler jam session at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join in the open-mic night starting at 9 p.m.

On Fridays and Saturdays, DJ dance music begins after 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., the Blue Holiday Band offers up their version of blues, R&B and jazz from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday, The Twins, Meg and Julie, play rock, folk, bluegrass and Americana from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., Rippin’ Chicken plays funk, boogaloo and soul jazz from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Tuesday, the Sarah Shea Jazz Quartet plays from the Great American Songbook from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Friday at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., Jenny Davis is up on the garden stage with her jazz vocals from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, Gerald Braude plays a mix of original and covers on his acoustic guitar from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Lobo del Mar brings its Celtic roots tunes with a variety of instruments from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., A Cedar Suede performs a crossroads of original modern musical flavors in the impound lot from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For those 21 and older. Free.

On Saturday, Jim Nyby & the F Street Band plays toe-tapping New Orleans blues and rock ’n’ roll in the impound lot from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For those 21 and older. Free.

■ On Friday at The Cup, 600 W. Sims Way, De Janeiro entertains with a mix of jazz, Brazilian and Latin beats fit for the whole family from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ Every Monday, Trevor Hanson plays guitar at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

High notes

■ Today, the Port Townsend Concerts on the Dock brings Rippin’ Chicken to Pope Marine Plaza in downtown Port Townsend. The group is composed of three funky brothers from three different mothers playing funk, boogaloo and soul jazz. Open at 4:30 p.m., with music from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Free.

Attendees can bring picnics or find food to-go at local businesses.

A beer, wine and cider garden will be available.

■ Today at the Resort of Port Ludlow beach, 121 Marina View Drive, the Badd Dog Blues Society plays for the beach party from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., featuring Jeff Dales on guitar and vocals, Todd Fisher on bass, Hammerin’ Hank on sax and Tom Svornich on drums. Free outdoor show for all ages with a barbecue.

■ On Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Coyle, Jean Mann brings her “soul-quenching voice” of the indie music genre, accompanied by violinist Geli Wuerzner. For all ages. Admission by donation.

■ On Saturday, Olympic Cellars, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, imports a buzzed-about Canadian band for the next summer concert series at 7 p.m. Delhi 2 Dublin rocks your world with fiddle, percussion and vocals.

This is a benefit performance for the Port Angeles Rotary Club.

■ On Saturday, join in the 32nd annual Joyce Daze Wild Blackberry Festival from 9 a.m. till after 5 p.m.

Dave and Rosalie Secord host the entertainment, and Jim Lind (blues, country, variety) kicks it off at 9 a.m., followed by Terry Roszatycki (country), at 10 a.m. at the Joyce Depot Museum

At 11 a.m., the barbershop quartet NBR (No Batteries Required) takes the stage, and at noon, the Secords with their Luck of the Draw band bring you plenty of bluegrass, blues, country, sing-along and old-time rock ’n’ roll.

The parade is at 1 p.m., there’s a cheering contest (who can holler the loudest?) at 2 p.m., and the Olympic Mountain Cloggers strut their stuff at 2:30 p.m.

Stick around to see the Dancing Grannies at 3 p.m., and then Luck of the Draw returns until closing.

■ On Sunday, Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road off North Barr Road, Agnew, brings Jim Scott, a folk singer and friend of Pete Seeger, for a concert at 2 p.m.

■ On Tuesday, Sequim’s Music in the Park will feature the third annual Karaoke Night starting at 6 p.m. at the outdoor James Center amphitheater in the Sequim Water Reuse Park, 563 N. Rhodefer Road, just north of Carrie Blake Park, with free fun for all.
