JOYCE — Voters in the Crescent School District have until Tuesday to decide whether a $1.31 million maintenance and operations levy will help supplement the school budget.
As of Friday, 49.3 percent of voters have returned ballots to the Clallam County Auditor’s Office in the all-mail election.
All ballots for Tuesday’s special election must carry a May 18 postmark or be deposited in the drive-up drop box at Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., by 8 p.m. to be counted.
Preliminary election results will be available shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday. Final results will be certified May 28.
Crescent School Board President Tracey Grover said members of the levy committee will be calling voters today and Monday to remind them to vote.
Last week, election reminder mailings were sent to all voters in the school district, and community members in support of the levy have been campaigning.
“We have been out talking to people about the levy,” Grover said.
“There are a lot of supportive people out here, but there are still those who do not understand how important the levy is — and those who just do not support taxes of any kind.”
State law requires a 60 percent voter support for levy passage.
If passed, the Crescent School District levy would generate $320,907 in 2005 and 2006, and $333,859 in 2007 and 2008.
The estimated tax rate for the first two years is $1.75 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, rising to $1.82 per $1,000 of assessed valuation in 2007 and 2008.
