Conservation district incumbents re-elected

Incumbents on both the Clallam and Jefferson Conservation Districts boards of supervisors who were up for re-election each will serve another three-year term.

Because only the incumbents filed for the positions, no polling was held.

Districts can cancel elections when only one candidate files for the post.

The Jefferson Conservation District was to have had an election last Wednesday, while Clallam’s scheduled election March 19 has been canceled.

Elijah “Lige” Christian, who has been a Jefferson district supervisor since February 2002, will continue on the board.

He was the only candidate to file for the post by the Feb. 8 deadline.

Don Hatler of Sequim will continue serving on the Clallam district board, being the only candidate to file for the position by the Feb. 20 deadline.

The Clallam district also has named Linda Barnfather of Sequim, an aide to 24th District Rep. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, to fill the remaining two years of Ashley Merscher’s three-year elected term.

Merscher resigned in January to attend graduate school out of state.

Also on the Clallam board, the appointed position currently held by Sequim-area dairy farmer Ben Smith expires this year.

He has submitted his application for reappointment.

To be considered for appointment, an application must be received by March 31.

The form must be sent to the Washington State Conservation Commission, P.O. Box 47721, Olympia, WA 98504-47721.

For more information, visit www.clallamcd.org; phone 360-452-1912, ext. 5; or go by the office at 1601 E. Front St., Suite A, Port Angeles.
