Clallam Bay, Sekiu spruce up for spring

CLALLAM BAY — The Clallam Bay-Sekiu Community Action Team is leading a Spring Spruce Up at the end of the month.

Residents can pick up garbage bags and gloves at the Clallam Bay Waste Facility, 384 Frontier St., and two Dumpsters will be available at that location from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 29 through May 31.

Trash, yard waste, scrap metal and recycled materials — which should be separated — will be accepted, but hazardous materials and appliances will not be, said Sasha Medlen, community action team program coordinator, in a statement.

Five bags per household will be accepted.

Tires accepted, also

Tires — preferably without hub caps — also will be accepted at the waste facility. The group is working with the state Department of Ecology to dispose of the tires, Medlen said.

The community action team is working with the Makah tribe to accept tires from Neah Bay residents, she said.

The group aims to collect a minimum of 800 tires.

During a “Stash Your Trash” treasure hunt on May 30, three tickets will be placed on trash around town, Medlen said.

Those who find tickets will receive $10 in Salmon Bucks to be used at local businesses.

The community action team officially incorporated in April as a state nonprofit organization. It is applying for federal nonprofit status, Medlen said.

It meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of each month at the Three Sisters Gallery, 16590 state Highway 112.

The team will elect officers at its June 13 meeting.

The community action team is seeking Spring Spruce Up volunteers to man the booth at the waste station, help with painting and cleaning and collect abandoned tires.

The Spring Spruce Up is sponsored by Clallam Bay/Sekiu Chamber of Commerce, Van Riper’s Resort, Strait Shots/Straitview Self Storage, Dick Colman, Patti’s Property Management and Services, Sunsets West COOP, Straitside Resort, Mike Doherty, Crystal Corliss, West End Consulting, Three Sisters and Olson’s Resort.

Almost $1,000 was collected to support the event, Medlen said.
