Accomplished 13-year-old violinist to perform Tuesday in Sequim

SEQUIM — A young and accomplished violinist will bring music of Romania, the United States, Scotland and Ireland to this month’s Music Live with Lunch concert.

Kate Powers, a 13-year-old who plays second violin in the Port Angeles Symphony, will step up at noon Tuesday at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church sanctuary, 525 N. Fifth Ave.

Kate will offer a 30-minute public concert — to fit along with a meal inside the lunch hour — of “traditional music, with just a bit of classical.”

Afterward, everyone is invited to stay for lunch, served hot at 12:30 p.m. in the parish hall at St. Luke’s.

Tickets, available both in advance and at the door, are $10 including music and meal.

Kate chose for her program Vittorio Monti’s “Csárdás,” a folk tune, along with Jay Ungar’s “Wizard’s Walk” and “Ashokan Farewell,” a fiddle piece heard in Ken Burns’ miniseries “The Civil War.”

The American “Black and White Rag” is also on the list for Tuesday, alongside some gypsy-flavored Romanian fiddle tunes.

For good measure, Kate will play one of her own compositions: “Celebration Bells,” a three-part jig.

The teenager, winner of the Port Angeles Symphony’s 2013 Young Artists Competition junior division, has been studying with violin teacher Mary Moon for three years and has performed with the Sequim Community Orchestra.

Her long-term goal: becoming one of the best violinists in the world.

Patrons who would like to buy tickets in advance can do so by stopping by the St. Luke’s office between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays or by phoning 360-683-4862.

Tickets will be offered at the door shortly before noon Tuesday.
