Have phone, will travel: Port Angeles graduate touches on mobile use abroad

PORT ANGELES — The Boys &Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will host Port Angeles graduate Kevin Williams of the television show “Rick Steves’ Europe” in a presentation, “Traveling with a Mobile Device.”

It will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Senior &Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

The public is welcome to attend. Entry is by donation, which will benefit the Boys &Girls Clubs.

“Mobile devices are revolutionizing how we travel,” Williams said.

“With a focus on Apple and Android devices, I’ll cover basic functions, such as how to avoid outrageous data-roaming fees, and share some tips on making the most of your device as a tool for navigating, getting key information and staying in touch with family and friends.”

Williams is a 2003 Port Angeles High School graduate.

“Inspired by my high school teacher Mr. Jack Grantham,” he said, “I caught the travel bug, saved my money and left for Europe three days after graduation.”

Williams spent his junior year at Western Washington University on exchange at the University of Hull in England and traveled much of Europe during school breaks and long weekends.

After graduating in 2008, he took a job teaching English as a second language for two years in Nanjing, China.

He continued to travel during school breaks, seeing much of the Far East.

In 2010, he landed his dream job with “Rick Steves’ Europe.” His duties include being a travel consultant, guidebook researcher, tour assistant, assistant manager of the travel store and presenter at Rick Steves’ travel talks.

Williams has traveled to 48 countries and five continents including Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Egypt, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina and Australia.

His travels in Europe include Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Wales.

Steves notes, “I’m lucky to have a well-traveled staff with experience that fills the gaps in mine. Two very popular subjects among our travelers lately (that I know little about) are Iceland and mobile device technology by our in-house expert on these topics, Kevin Williams.”
