SEQUIM — Sequim teenager Sam Manders, 17, and his mother, Katherin Sumpter, recently made their ninth annual trip to Portland, Ore., to deliver soda can pull tabs for recycling.
The pull tabs are donated to the Ronald McDonald House, a “home away from home” for parents of seriously ill children in Portland hospitals.
Sam said he collects the pull tabs so the charity can sell them to a recycler and lower housing fees for families going through medical emergencies.
During the past year, Sam collected 257.5 pounds, or about 436,720 tabs.
Sam plans to collect the tab tops through his senior year (2014) and has found a soon-to-be sixth-grader who will keep collecting the tops and raising funds after Sam heads to college.
Contributors included Anna Bourquin, Nancy Cohn, Deanna Cristina, Clark and Jan Culver, Mary Dahl, Roberta Dickinson, Eric and Kathy Fehrmann, Neal and Kathryn Fridley, Carol Gates and the folks at Agnew Helpful Neighbors, Sandy and Nancy Goldstein, Marguerite Glover and the folks at Peter Black Real Estate, Diane Horton, Callie Kroll, Larry and Pat Ledbetter, Ingrid Lehrer and Della Loska, Gene and Maura Mattson and the Olympic Peninsula Footprinters Association, Sissy Nichols, Anne Olsen, Seventh-day Adventist Church, Donna Gallaher and Joy Barrett and the Sequim Prairie Grange, Gail Sumpter and Blue Sky Property Management, Sharon Stevens, Teresa Stone and Debra Trussel.
