PORT TOWNSEND — Documents outlining Jefferson County's draft updates to its shoreline master plan are available for viewing at neighborhood information booths.

The booths, manned by staff with the county's Department of Community Development, are intended to generate attendance at a community planning workshop planned on July 11.

The three documents available for the public to review are a revised committee working draft shoreline master program and two supplemental technical documents: the final shoreline inventory and characterization report and the shoreline restoration plan.

Booths open today
The next information booths will be from 11 a.m. to noon today at the Coyle Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Quilcene, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nordland General Store, 7180 Flagler Road in Nordland on Marrowstone Island, and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Port Hadlock QFC.

The public can get information about existing shoreline conditions, state guidelines, changes to buffers, development standards and permit processes proposed in the updated document.

Workshop next Thursday
Next Thursday, July 10, a daylong community planning workshop is planned on the shoreline master program.

The workshop will be at the Inn at Port Hadlock, with focus groups held during the day and a meeting for the general public from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The focus groups will consider vegetation conservation and shoreline restoration from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and commercial, port, industrial and economic development from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

After a lunch break, the meetings will resume with public access and recreation discussed from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; historical, archaeological, cultural, scientific and educational resources from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and federal consistency from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

An open house reception area will be available for drop-in visitors throughout the day.

"Public involvement has been an important part of the SMP update project over the past two years," said Al Scalf, director of the county Department of Community Development.

"The county has been working with two advisory groups, holding a number of public events to facilitate citizen and stakeholder participation.

"The upcoming workshop is another opportunity for interested parties to further consider shoreline issues."

The formal public review process will begin this fall when a preliminary draft plan is submitted to the county Planning Commission, to make a recommendation to the three Jefferson County commissioners.

The plan is due to be submitted to the state Department of Ecology for final approval by June 30, 2009.

Feedback is being taken now on the current version of the draft proposal.

Comment can be taken at the July 10 workshop, or can be submitted by July 11 to the county Department of Community Development office.

Formal comment also may be made later in the year during the public review process.

The documents are available for public review at community development office, the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock and at www.co.jefferson.wa.us/commdevelopment/ShorelinePlanning.htm.
