WEEKEND: Sisters’ songs of elephants, elevators, bathrobes part of ‘Good Clean Fun’ concert Saturday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Pipia Sisters, Sophie and Phina, are bringing a show full of songs about the moon, elephants, sandwiches, elevators and bathrobes out this Saturday, just to celebrate the fact that spring is here.

Calling this concert “Good Clean Fun,” the sisters have chosen Better Living Through Coffee, the cafe at 100 Tyler St., as their venue for a 6 p.m. gig.

Admission is by donation, and music lovers of all ages are invited.

Phina and Sophie, who grew up in Port Townsend, are known for their vocal harmonies along with an unusual instrumental mix: They play guitar, ukulele, keyboard, kazoo, accordion and, of course, the trombone.

Saturday’s show is all new tunes, said Phina, adding that Better Living Through Coffee, the setting for a Pipia Sisters concert last year, has just the right atmosphere.

“We’ve cooked up a very special night of completely original music for our Port Townsend friends,” Sophie added.

“Our goal is always to provide something inspiring and unexpected, and this concert hits the spot.”

Generation Goat Rocket

The Pipia Sisters, who also perform as the theater company Generation Goat Rocket, brought their original show, “Crook of My Dreams,” to Canada’s St.-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival last year.

They plan next to bring their new production, “Dances with Spoons,” to the Vancouver, B.C., Fringe Festival, as well as to Port Townsend.

Also in Port Townsend, the sisters offer a tuition-free summertime theater workshop for children age 7 to 14, and an internship for a high school student who is interested in pursuing a theater career.

For information, see www.goatrocket.com or phone 360-774-2965.

“We’re so thrilled to be able to provide a diverse offering of family-friendly theater and music programs,” Phina said.

“It’s our way of giving back to a community that continues to support and inspire our art.”
