WEEKEND: Pink Up Port Angeles to begin Saturday

PORT ANGELES — Pink Up Port Angeles is beginning its sixth year of fundraising for Operation Uplift this weekend.

All proceeds from the Pink Up campaign, an annual fundraiser by the Port Angeles Soroptimist Noon Club, go to the all-volunteer Operation Uplift, a Port Angeles-based group that provides help and information for people with cancer.

“Last year’s efforts produced over $50,000, and we are hoping to match that amount even with our economy in lag mode,” said Linda deBord, coordinator of the annual fundraiser.

Activities in years past have been held within one week. This year, most events are scheduled from this Saturday through Saturday, June 21.

The exception is the all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner with “celebrity” waiters at Chestnut Cottage. The $10 dinner will be Saturday, June 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Still the same great price, same great waiters, different day,” deBord said.

Saturday events

On Saturday, pink ribbons will go up all over town — including police cars and other city vehicles — and merchants may start decorating windows for judging by Laurel Black Design, planned June 20-21.

“Hopefully, we’ll be flying a pink flag from the city’s flagpole,” deBord said.

Also Saturday will be the first event, a free breast health clinic at OMC Imaging Center.

Staffed by members of Operation Uplift, the clinic will include free mammograms as needed for women without insurance or who are underinsured.

The third annual Dennis Wilcox Pooch and Papa Walk along the Waterfront Trail will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

The walk for dogs and their owners will begin on the trail in front of the Red Lion Hotel and end at Francis Street Park.

The entry fee is $30.

Photographs will be taken, and participants will receive completion certificates.

Pink Up will provide a treat, doggie bag and scarf for the dog and a T-shirt for the human companion. Pre-registration is needed to ensure that the correct-size shirt is available.

Walkers can sign up at the event or find pre-registration forms at veterinarians’ offices.

Pre-registration forms also were published in the Peninsula Daily News on May 22 and 23.

The walk is named after a local veterinarian who died of cancer, deBord said, adding that his wife, licensed medical practitioner Kathleen Graf, is sponsoring the event along with Windermere Real Estate.

5K Run/Walk

Before the pooch walk Sunday will be the Pink Up 5K Run/Walk.

It will begin at 8 a.m. on the Waterfront Trail, with the start and finish line in front of the Red Lion Hotel.

The entry fee is $30.

Participants can be timed. They must let volunteers know they want to be.

All participants will be given water, an energy bar and a Pink Up T-shirt.

“And when you finish, we’ll take your picture to prove you made it,” deBord said.

Pre-registration, forms for which are at veterinarians’ offices and pet stores, is needed to ensure that the correct-size shirt is available.

Pre-registration forms also were published in the PDN on May 22, May 23, June 1 and June 4.

The event is sponsored by PA Auto Sales and Olympic Medical Center.

Pink Out the Pier

On Wednesday, Pink Out the Pier will offer music, bubbles compliments of Kandu Enterprise, cookies made by North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center students — sponsored by Angeles Collision and Towing — and information on cancer prevention.

The event, sponsored by Olympic Peninsula Title Co. on City Pier, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“This fun-filled evening will include soft sales of all things pink: earrings, socks, T-shirts plus good information on survivor activities,” deBord said.

Golf tournament

A golf tournament at the Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road, will begin with a shotgun start at noon Friday, June 20.

The cost is $95 or $60 for members of the golf club.

A 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE will be awarded to the winner of the hole-in-one contest.

Other prizes will be awarded in contests and to the winners of the tournament.

Any contestant that takes a test-drive of a GMC will be given $100.

Heavy hors d’oeuvres and a no-host reception after the tournament are planned, along with a 50-50 raffle that will go on all day.

Bake sale

The following day, Saturday, June 21, a bake sale will begin at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., at 10 a.m.

The Soroptimist-baked goods will be on sale until all are gone.

Chestnut Cottage

The Chestnut Cottage dinner is “always one of our most fun evenings,” deBord said.

Well-known people around town will serve as waiters, vying for tips as they serve a dinner of salad, garlic bread and spaghetti.

Dessert, wine and beer will be available for a fee in addition to the $10 dinner cost.

A gift basket from Franni’s Gift Expressions will be raffled. Raffle tickets are $1 each.

“This year, the owners of the Chestnut Cottage are out of town weekdays baby-sitting their first grandchild,” deBord said.

“Rather than give it up, they decided to hold the event on the 28th.

“I was thrilled.”
