WEEKEND: Night of poetry in Port Townsend on Saturday

Peninsula Daily News

PORT TOWNSEND — To celebrate the National Poetry Month of April, the Writers’ Workshoppe and Imprint Books are planning two nights of poetry read aloud: this Saturday and again Saturday, April 25.

“Three poets with three distinct points of view will share their voices with us,” said Anna Quinn, owner of the Workshoppe.

Admission is free to both events, with doors opening at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. readings.

This Saturday night brings Sylvia Bowman and Peter Quinn, both authors of books on Irenicon, the Writers Workshoppe’s own press.

Bowman published We Met Once Before, a book packed with more than 70 years and three lives — lived in 1950s New York City, then Houston, then Port Townsend.

“Sylvia is a treasure,” said Irenicon’s Peter Quinn. “For years, I called her work ‘Sylvia’s Pearls’ as she participated in my workshops.”

Quinn’s own book, Painting Circles on Straight Highways, is his first poetry collection.

It spans 40 years of stories, each written in poetic form.

The April 25 reading will feature the nationally known Port Townsend poet Gary Copeland Lilley.

He’s published three full-length collections, the most recent being High Water Everywhere from Willow Books.

The Writers Workshoppe and Imprint Books are at 820 Water St., and can be reached at 360-379-2617, while more information awaits at writersworkshoppe.com.

The lighthouse was built in 1878 when Congress approved $8,000 for the light and foghorns. Although the facility is still an active U.S. Coast Guard station, the equipment is monitored and operated remotely and no keepers are present. Regular tours on Saturdays and Sundays will resume in May. (Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
