WEEKEND: Geoffrey Castle, guests to conjure seasonal magic at Port Angeles performance Sunday

PORT ANGELES — The pinnacle of Geoffrey Castle’s Celtic Christmas concert, for one prominent listener, arrives when Beth Quist sings “O Holy Night.”

That listener is “Santa Claus,” who will also appear in Castle’s extravaganza at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave., this Sunday.

This Santa has a spokesman: Mac Macdonald, a life coach, motivational speaker and fan of Quist, Castle and the small flock of performers who will gather on stage for the 4:30 p.m. show. It’s a Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts presentation, with tickets ranging from $15 to $25 for adults and $10 for youth age 14 and younger.

Quist’s resume includes performances with Bobby McFerrin and a stint as the vocalist with the Cirque du Soleil show “Ka” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. She will take the stage Sunday alongside Santa, Castle, the electric violinist, and rock ‘n’ roll bagpiper Don Scobie.

The show’s theme is “Power of Elves,” so naturally the jolly old elf can be counted on.

“He’s truly hilarious,” said Castle. “This year, he’s loaned us two of his elves too. Real elves.

“Beth Quist is the Elf Queen,” Castle added.

He’s not kidding.

“I’m pretty sure that no one has ever seen a concert quite like this one,” Castle said.

“I’m a rocker at heart, with a love for ancient melodies,” and a background in jazz, blues and world music. And while the word Christmas is in the title, his show “is not about promoting a specific religious world view,” Castle noted.

“This show is about music, magic, community . . . all are welcome.”

Tickets to Castle’s Celtic Christmas are available at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., Port Angeles; at Pacific Mist Books, 121 W. Washington St., Sequim and via www.JFFA.org.
