United Way fundraising goal $1,100,000

United Way of Clallam County will kick off its annual fundraising campaign Sept. 11 with a goal of raising $1.1 million for 27 member nonprofit agencies.

The volunteer campaign co-chairmen are Jack Marshall of Blake Sand and Gravel and Pam Marshall of the Peninsula Children’s Clinic, said Jody Moss, United Way executive director, in a prepared statement.

The campaign will begin with volunteer Day of Caring projects in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay-Sekiu, as well as remembrances of 9/11 — both in line with the fundraising campaign’s theme: Live United . . . Now More Than Ever.

Remembrance services will be held Sept. 11.

They are:

• Port Angeles, 8:30 a.m., at Francis Street Park.

• Sequim, 8:30 a.m., at the flagpole at 815 W. Washington St.

• Forks, 9 a.m., at the Quillayute Valley School District administration building, 191 S. Spartan Ave.

• Sekiu, 9 a.m., at the West End Youth & Community Club.

Volunteers also can participate in community projects.

On Saturday only, a cleanup is planned at the Sequim Food Bank, 144 W. Alder St.

Also on Saturday only, the Sequim School District soccer programs need help to build a soccer storage shed. Volunteers, who should bring work gloves and carpentry hand tools, will meet in the middle of the north soccer field at Hendrickson Street and north Sequim Avenue.

Port Angeles projects

Port Angeles projects begin at 9 a.m. both Sept. 11 and Sept. 12.

Painting and cleaning will be done at the First Step Family Support Center, 325 E. Sixth St.

The Paint The Town project through Volunteer Chore Services at 630 E. Front St., Suite D, will paint homes of low-income seniors or disabled adults.

At St. Andrew’s Place, 520 E. Park Ave., volunteers will socialize with seniors or landscape and clean up the grounds.

Volunteers working with the Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Division will clean up Francis Street Park and Valley Estuary Park.

Also, on Sept. 12 only, in connection with the Day of Caring, the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the American Red Cross plans a class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for a $10 fee. The class will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Naval Elks Lodge, 131 E. First St. Phone 360-457-7933 to register.

Forks projects

Forks volunteers will clean up the town Sept. 11 in preparation for Stephenie Meyer Day weekend Sept. 12-13.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
