Tidepools and mooring buoys: Changes proposed for The Landing waterfront

PORT ANGELES — Paul Cronauer has plans to change the appearance of the shoreline near his waterfront building, The Landing mall.

He has filed for a shoreline substantial development permit with the city to install three mooring buoys north of his building, artificial tide pools and expand public access to the mouth of Peabody Creek.

The first two proposals will be heard at the city Planning Commission’s June 8 meeting, when it meets at 6 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

The third proposal, to expand public access to the mouth of the creek, has been “taken off the table” for now, said city planning manager Sue Roberds.

Cronauer had proposed building an amphitheater-like structure at the creek’s mouth.

He said it would provide for seating and steps down into the creek and tidal area but wouldn’t be big enough to host performances.

Roberds said the city is not considering the structure, which would be on city property, because it hasn’t settled what it wants to do with that area as part of its waterfront redevelopment plan.

“It has not been determined how that area will be used,” she said.

Cronauer said he was disappointed but is still moving ahead with the other aspects of the permit application.

“If you’re . . . bringing ideas to the table, they are not necessarily going to be embraced by everyone else,” he said. “You are going to be rejected from time to time.

“I’ll just keep bringing them.”

The tide pools would involve water cascading down rip rap from the northeast end of The Landing’s parking lot.

Cronauer said it would be used as part of the Arthur D. Feiro Marine Life Center’s educational programs.

He said he expects to have the buoys and tide pools in place by the end of the summer.

“It’s all part of my initiative to bring more things down to this end of the beach and this part of downtown,” Cronauer said.
