PORT ANGELES — A 19-year-old Port Angeles man is expected to be sentenced Thursday following a guilty plea to lesser drug charges after he was initially charged in the heroin-related death of another teenager.
David Allen Clampett Zavodny pleaded guilty last Thursday to two counts of possession of a controlled substance — heroin and methamphetamine — and one count each of maintaining premises for drug trafficking and possession of heroin.
Zavodny was initially arrested in connection with the May 14 death of Maceo Niehaus, 17, at a home in the 700 block of South Ennis Street.
Zavodny was first charged with one count of maintaining premises for drug trafficking, with a controlled-substance homicide charge added after autopsy results confirmed Niehaus died of a heroin overdose.
The Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has recommended a 40-month prison sentence and a prison-based drug treatment program for Zavodny, according to Superior Court documents.
Zavodny is expected to be sentenced during the 9 a.m. hearing Thursday. He remained in the Clallam County jail Tuesday on $250,000 bond.
According to Port Angeles police accounts, Niehaus stopped breathing after he injected himself with heroin Zavodny had reportedly given him at the 19-year-old’s residence.
Zavodny reportedly applied ice and cold water to Niehaus in an attempt to revive him, calling 9-1-1 between 40 and 45 minutes after Niehaus stopped breathing.
More than 300 friends and family attended Niehaus’ May 23 funeral.
