Tax preparation help is available in Port Angeles and East Jefferson County on Monday and Tuesday, since the deadline has been extended for filing federal income taxes.
Federal tax returns are due by midnight Tuesday rather than the usual April 15 deadline, which is today, or Monday, which is Emancipation Day, a holiday celebrated annually April 16 in Washington, D.C.
Regional post offices are not planning to stay open late to accept tax returns. If mailed, returns must be taken to the post office by the end of the regular business day.
AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will offer last-minute return preparation in Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Chimacum.
The Tax-Aide service is free and available to low- and middle-income taxpayers of all ages.
Volunteers are IRS-certified to prepare most basic tax returns and can file electronically.
They do not prepare returns for taxpayers who have income from rental properties or with complicated business returns.
Bring all necessary tax documents and a copy of last year’s return.
