Talk this coming Saturday in Port Townsend on saving the historical past

PORT TOWNSEND — Bill Tennent, executive director of the Jefferson County Historical Society, will present “Saving Stories Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” at the American Association of University Women-Port Townsend branch meeting on Saturday (Jan. 17).

All are welcome at the meeting from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St.

Tennent, who has worked in the museum for more than 30 years, will present a short video along with his address.

Tennent became executive director of the historical society in 2002.

After earning bachelor’s degrees in pre-law and history and a master’s degree in museum studies, he worked as a historian for the Bureau of Land Management, curator of history at the Museum of Western Colorado, deputy director of the Cayman Islands National Museum and director of the Davenport House Museum in Savannah.

Tennent co-authored Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging, which became a professional standard for museum cataloging in North America.

He has served on the National Endowment for the Humanities and with various museum associations and is now a member of the Washington Museum Association board.

The Jefferson County Historical Society was organized in 1879 with a mission to discover, collect, preserve and promote the heritage of Jefferson County.

Today, the society operates five facilities, including the Historical Research Center, which houses more than 500,000 documents, 40,000 artifacts and 30,000 photographs.

The staff and hundreds of volunteers run oral history projects, grant historic preservation awards, conduct surveys of historic structures, lead walking tours and provide a wide range of educational programs for all ages.
