Sequim mayor bristles over missive from tax guru Eyman

SEQUIM — Puffs of smoke may have been escaping from Mayor Laura Dubois’ e-mail box.

“A recent news story reports that you want to take away our $30 [vehicle license] tabs and the citizens’ right to vote,” begins a missive sent to Dubois on Friday.

“Where exactly do you get the impression that voters here want higher taxes, especially increased car tab fees?

“Clallam County voters consistently and viscerally oppose unilateral tax and fee increases.”

The sender of the scorching message?

Tim Eyman, the conservative activist who’s spent a decade crusading against tax increases levied without voter approval statewide.

The people “deserve to know that you are trying to take away their right to vote,” Eyman wrote, adding that in “upcoming press releases and e-mails,” he’ll target the “anti-taxpayer, anti-voter-approval representatives on the Sequim City Council.”

And he warned:

“I’m going to do my dead-level best to make sure the voters of Clallam County know about your upcoming tax increase every step of the way.”

The lighthouse was built in 1878 when Congress approved $8,000 for the light and foghorns. Although the facility is still an active U.S. Coast Guard station, the equipment is monitored and operated remotely and no keepers are present. Regular tours on Saturdays and Sundays will resume in May. (Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
