Sand sculpture contest to go Hollywood for 2012

PORT ANGELES — The theme for the Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic in July will be “Hollywood.”

Inge Baumwell of Port Angeles came up with the idea.

Her entry was chosen from more than 300 sent into a sand sculpture theme contest sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News.

Baumwell’s theme will be incorporated into sand sculptures created by world master sculptors during the sand sculpture contest that will be part of Nor’wester Rotary Club’s annual Arts in Action festival, scheduled July 27-29 on the Port Angeles City Pier.

Baumwell, 81, is donating her award of $100 Downtown Dollars to the Port Angeles Food Bank.

Doc Reiss of Nor’wester Rotary said the response to the contest was “great this year, not only in terms of ideas; the number of entries was up over 30 percent from what we normally see.”

In the past 10 years, the number of entries has averaged about 220, Reiss said.

This year, Reiss said, more than 307 “good, well-thought-out and creative ideas” were received.
