PORT ANGELES — Chamber of Commerce officials are looking for the public to support their efforts for this year’s Fourth of July celebration.
That support comes in two forms — money for fireworks and participation in the downtown parade.
According to chamber Executive Director Russ Veenema, fireworks this year will cost $15,000.
In order to raise enough money to pay for the fireworks, Veenema and other chamber officials will take to the radio Wednesday to ask for contributions.
Veenema said Chamber of Commerce representatives will be on KONP AM 1450 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
During Wednesday’s “fireworks radiothon,” chamber officials will call on the public to pledge money — checks, cash and credit cards are accepted — and talk about this year’s patriotic celebration.
“Literally hundreds of people help cover the costs of the fireworks [every year], making it possible for the community to have one of the best shows in western Washington,” said Veenema.
“I am always amazed at the cross section of people that get involved. Businesses encourage donations at the office and then bring in a wad of cash.
“We have had the proceeds from a family’s lemonade stand brought in as their donation, corporations make contributions as part of their community involvement — but by far the majority of the donations are personal checks in the $50 range.”
