PORT ANGELES — Eight pallets of food recently were transferred from Albertsons to the Port Angeles Food Bank truck on their way to Peninsula Behavioral Health for the inaugural “Canstruction” event Saturday.
Four businesses will build sculptures built solely out of food cans.
The public can see the sculptures between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday at Peninsula Behavioral Health, 118 E. Eighth St.
A donation of one food can is requested at the door, and everyone can cast a vote for their favorite sculpture to determine the People’s Choice winner.
After the viewing, the sculptures will be dismantled and the food distributed in time for the holidays among the Port Angeles and Sequim food banks as well as the residential program at Peninsula Behavioral Health.
Under the guidance of architect Mary Ellen Winborn and engineer Dean Reed, First Federal, Merrill & Ring, Windermere and Peninsula Behavioral Health submitted plans for king-size sculptures to fit this year’s theme, “SEA What We CAN Do.”
Almost 8,000 cans
In total, almost 8,000 cans of food will be used for the structures.
“I know one team is assembling a boat, and the Olympic Mountains are the backdrop of another,” said board member Laura O’Neal.
“Who can say what else they have cooked up?”
The judges will be graphic artist Laurel Black, Feiro Marine Life Center Executive Director Deb Moriarty, Coast Guard Command Master Chief Lawrence Moroles, Navy Capt. Jonathan Picker and Clallam County District Court Judge Rick Porter.
Trophies will be awarded for Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Integrity, Jurors’ Favorite and Honorable Mention.
“It has been brilliant to witness these teams come together,” said Rebekah Miller, development coordinator at Peninsula Behavioral Health.
“There are so many collaborations that are making this possible.
“Clallam Title and Cobalt Mortgage is supporting Windermere, and Camaraderie Cellars, Olympic Cellars, Muchwear, Grant Munro and Womanfest have provided support to the PBH team. Even Black Ball Ferry Line got on board,” Miller added.
