NEWS BRIEFS: ‘Bach to Bluegrass’ to stage this Friday in Sequim . . . and other items

SEQUIM — The Powerhouse band and the Deka Piano Trio will converge for an unusual concert, “Bach to Bluegrass,” at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, this Friday night.

The Deka — cellist Marlene Moore, violinist Penelope Linterman and pianist Gary McRoberts — will step up first at 7 p.m. with a set of short pieces by Mozart, Bach and other masters.

Then the seven-member Powerhouse, featuring teenage fiddler Kate Powers, will deliver tunes from “Sweet Georgia Brown” to “Benny and Bea’s Waltz.”

Admission is a suggested $10 donation, while students will be admitted free.

Corvids class set

SEQUIM — The ninth annual “Corvids in Winter” class will be held at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, by the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society.

The class is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Participants can learn about local ravens, crows and jays.

The class is $10. All proceeds benefit the center’s educational programs.

Plant lecture set

PORT TOWNSEND — Far Reaches Farms’ Kelly Dobson and Sue Milliken will lecture at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The duo will discuss their lifelong love affair with plants, many of which have come from worldwide seed-collecting expeditions.

Tickets for this event are $12 per person and can be purchased the day of the event if space is available.

‘Fed Up’ screening

SEQUIM — The second film in the Winter Film Series at Nash’s Farm Store is “Fed Up,” a documentary about sugar in the standard American diet.

It will screen at Nash’s, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The film is free and open to the public.

“Fed Up” shows how the first dietary guidelines issued by the U.S. government 30 years ago overlooked the role of sugar in increasing risks of obesity, diabetes and associated ill-health outcomes, particularly in children, according to a news release.

American journalist and TV personality Katie Couric produced the documentary and is its narrator.

Sunday Assembly

PORT TOWNSEND — Sunday Assembly Port Townsend will meet Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St.

Sunday Assembly is a secular congregational community seeking to celebrate life.

The group meets the fourth Sunday of each month.

Everyone is invited to sing pop songs, hear talks and partake of coffee and cake after each meeting.

Hearing loss meet

PORT TOWNSEND — A free Hearing Loss Association, East Jefferson Chapter, meeting will take place at the Port Townsend Community Centar, 620 Tyler St., at 1:45 p.m. Monday.

The public is welcome.

This meeting will focus on “how you and your hearing loss survived the holidays,” according to a news release.

The Hearing Loss Association is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the well-being of all people who do not hear well.

Nominations sought for state awards

OLYMPIA — The state Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is seeking nominations for the 25th annual awards for historic preservation achievement.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, March 20.

The awards recognize people, organizations and projects that have achieved distinction in the field of historic preservation.

Awards will be presented at a ceremony sponsored by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation on Tuesday, May 19, at the Legislative Building in Olympia.

Nominations can be made in the categories of historic preservation planning, historic property rehabilitation projects, career achievement, public education, stewardship, special achievement media and cemetery preservation.

A nominee in cemetery preservation should demonstrate outstanding career achievement, stewardship or a completed preservation effort in the context of preserving a historic cemetery.
