Fire streaks through mobile home in Port Hadlock-Irondale area; no one injured

PORT HADLOCK — A mobile home in the Port Hadlock-Irondale area suffered heavy damage in a fire Thursday morning.

No one was injured, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes after arriving at the home in the initial block of May Street.

The four residents, who were not identified, called 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers at about 9:35 a.m.

The structure suffered significant damage from flames, smoke and water, Beezley said.

The initial focus of the fire investigation is the wood-burning stove and pipe exiting through the ceiling and roof, he said.

One of the four residents of the house told firefighters the stove had been lit earlier in the morning.

When one resident came out of her bedroom after 9 a.m., she saw smoke against the ceiling of the living room and small “candle-like” flames where the stove pipe exited through the ceiling.

The residents left the home and saw flames on the roof.

They fought the blaze with fire extinguishers and attempted to use a garden hose, which proved to be frozen solid, Beezley said, before calling for help.

Twenty-one firefighters and command staff from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Naval Magazine Indian Island and Jefferson County Fire District No. 2 responded.

A unit from Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue provided district coverage at the East Jefferson Fire-Rescue station at 9193 Rhody Drive while station firefighters were out fighting the fire.
