Films on farming to be screened at Peninsula College next Friday

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will present a double feature of documentaries about food and farming March 6.

“The New Green Giants,” which is 47 minutes long, will begin at 7 p.m. and will be immediately followed by “Big or Small?,” which is 29 minutes, in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

General admission is a suggested $5 donation; students with a Peninsula College ID card will be admitted free.

Both films are sponsored by Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema Film Series and the Port Angeles Food Bank, which will be the recipient of all donations.

Talk after films

A discussion led by local area farmers will immediately follow the showing of the films.

“The New Green Giants,” directed by Ted Remerowski, looks at some of the bigger questions surrounding organic food.

Is it really healthier? Is it truly organic? Is it possible to grow from a mom-and-pop operation to become a huge supplier of major grocery chains?

Is it actually sustainable? Is it realistic to think the world can be fed organically?

“The New Green Giants” reveals the complex and controversial world of today’s organic food industry.

“Big or Small?,” directed by Alex Gabbay, displays how economies of scale suggest that bigger is better when it comes to feeding a hungry planet.

But there’s a price to “big” that’s not factored in at the checkout counter, and as a consequence, a “small farmer” revolution is unfolding in many rich countries, including the United States.

What’s the best method of growing food for a hungry population of 9.5 billion people? Big — or small?
