EYE ON JEFFERSON: Commissioners eye change order for Memorial Stadium’s roof rehab

The three Jefferson County commissioners will consider a change order adding more than $7,000 to the contract for the Memorial Field roof rehabilitation when they meet Monday.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in commissioners’ chambers at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

The change order would increase the contract with Primo Construction Inc. of Carlsborg to $306,670.

Commissioners also will conduct a public hearing on administration of a community development block grant.

The county has applied for the annual grant since 1998 to provide essential services for low-income clients of Olympic Community Action Programs.

The total available grant funding in 2015 is $100,808, with the county receiving $3,500 in administrative costs.

Commissioners will consider awarding a contract to Bruch & Bruch Construction of Port Angeles for Dowans Creek Road alignment.

Bruch & Bruch bid $338,466. The work will be funded 75 percent by federal funds, 12.5 percent by state funds and 12.5 percent by county funds.

Commissioners also will consider awarding a $190,113 contract to C&J Excavating Inc. of Carlsborg for the Safe Route to Schools project in Chimacum.

They will open bids for improvement of Paradise Bay Road. The county engineer estimates the project will be $1.1 million. Work will be funded 90 percent by the state, with the rest coming from the county road fund.

The board will consider awarding a bid for newspaper legal notices.

At 1:30 p.m., commissioners will hear an update on Bangor and Devil’s Vista timber areas from state Department of Natural Resources representatives.

Jefferson Healthcare

Jefferson Healthcare commissioners will hear a report on the reproductive services assessment task force and consider accepting a bid for construction of an emergency and specialty services building when they gather for the first of two special meetings Tuesday.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. in the hospital auditorium, 834 Sheridan St., Port Townsend. A public comment period is set for 2:20 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., a second special session will focus on a presentation by Dr. Tom Locke, Jefferson County public health officer, and Siri Kushner, epidemiologist with the Kitsap County Public Health Department.

In February, the American Civil Liberties Union said in a letter to the hospital that it was out of compliance with state law because it does not provide abortion services on-site.

Hospital officials are creating a reproductive services task force composed of health care providers to review services and perhaps recommend they be expanded.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
