PORT ANGELES — An elderly Port Angeles woman cut her leg but was otherwise safe after she escaped the flames that engulfed her west Port Angeles duplex early Thursday.
Port Angeles Fire Department crews found the dwelling at 912 Seamount Drive engulfed when they arrived shortly before 3 a.m., Port Angeles Fire Marshal Ken Dubuc said.
Crews from three fire engines — two from the Port Angeles Fire Department and one from Clallam County Fire District No. 2 — put out the fire by about 4 a.m.
“One side of the duplex was occupied by an older female,” Dubuc said.
“It was my understanding that the woman staying in the one side of the duplex was awakened by smoke detectors.
“As she was getting out, she sustained a cut on her leg.”
Dubuc said he did not know the identify the woman.
She was taken by family members to Olympic Medical Center, where she was treated and released, he said.
The woman’s side of the duplex was heavily damaged by the fire, Dubuc said.
The other side, 918 Seamount Drive, sustained heat damage. It was not occupied.
An electrical transformer damaged in the blaze knocked out power to the immediate area, Dubuc said.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The Port Angeles Fire Department will lead the investigation, he added.
More than a dozen responders battled the blaze.
