CLALLAM BAY –– One unit at Clallam Bay Corrections Center continues to be on lockdown through tonight (Friday) after an inmate allegedly stabbed another with a homemade shank Thursday night, officials reported today.
Daniel E. Johnson, 32, a convicted murderer from Whatcom County, was taken to a maximum-security unit of the prison after allegedly stabbing an unnamed fellow inmate in the face, according to a report from Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron.
Norah West with the state’s corrections department said the victim was taken to Forks Community Hospital, where he was treated for wounds from the assault and returned last night.
West said prisoners’ movements would likely remain restricted at least through Friday night.
West would not identify the victim nor say how the knife was made.
A criminal investigation is being conducted by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office. The incident could lead to an assault charge against Johnson, West said.
Johnson is in Clallam Bay Corrections Center on two counts of second-degree murder. His sentence is scheduled to complete in February 2050.
Clallam Bay Corrections Center, located on the northwest tip of the Olympic Peninsula, houses about 850 offenders in medium-, close- and maximum-custody units. It and the Washington State Penitentiary are the two highest-security prisons in Washington.
