Clallam awards $10,800 in historical grants

Genealogical society, history center to receive funds

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners approved Heritage Fund grants for two nonprofit organizations for a total of $10,800.

The Clallam County Genealogical Society will receive just less than $8,800 for computer and monitor replacements.

That will allow it to continue nonprofit historical research of ancestral lines for county residents, as the current technology has become obsolete due to age, according to the Heritage Advisory Board’s (HAB’s) March agenda.

The North Olympic History Center will receive $2,000 for an Olympic Peninsula Postal History Traveling Exhibit.

The public programming will explore the history of mail delivery and post offices on the North Olympic Peninsula and will be loaned to various organizations across the county for the next three years, according to the agenda.

In total, the Heritage Grant Fund received five applications during its last cycle.

Three were deemed ineligible after attorney review.

The grant requests that did not move forward included the Clallam Bay Slip Point Lighthouse Keeper’s $41,000 request, Associated Rental LLC’s $10,000 request and the North Olympic Peninsula Railroaders’ $5,000 request.

The other two applications were recommended to the commissioners by the HAB.

The Heritage Fund has about $50,000 in reserves, Chief Financial Officer Mark Lane told the county commissioners during a work session on March 10.

The fund is supported through a portion of document recording fees collected by the county auditor’s office. They are to be used for projects that “promote historical preservation or historical programs, which may include preservation of historic documents,” according to the commissioners’ Tuesday agenda.

That could include public programming, capital improvements or equipment, collections management or training, according to the HAB’s agenda.
