PORT TOWNSEND — This month’s Candlelight Concert at Trinity United Methodist Church brings together 16-year-old cellist Madelyn Kowalski and pianist Lisa Lanza.
The two will play Bach’s “Arioso,” Shostakovich’s Cello and Piano Sonata in D Minor, Gaspar Cassado’s “Requiebros” and Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece for cello, Variations on a Rococo Theme.
The pair will step up at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, 609 Taylor St.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with admission at $10 for adults. Children are admitted free, and refreshments will be served after the concert.
Madelyn, a home-schooled junior in high school, has been studying cello for nine years. A Marrowstone Islander, she travels to Bellevue weekly to take lessons from Leslie Marckx.
She recently placed first in the 2015 Port Angeles Symphony Young Artist Competition and was a finalist in this year’s Seattle Young Artists Music Festival, performing Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme in both competitions.
Thursday’s Candlelight Concert will be her fifth with Lanza. The pair also has performed at various benefit concerts in Port Townsend.
Lanza has been performing as a solo artist and collaborator for more than 20 years on the Olympic Peninsula and in the greater Seattle area.
The holder of a master’s degree in piano and accompanying from the University of Redlands in California, she is a performing member of the Ladies Musical Club in her native Seattle.
In Port Townsend, she serves as accompanist at Grace Lutheran Church and with the Community Chorus of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County as well as the Rainshadow Chorale.
Proceeds from the Candlelight Concert series benefit local charities and Trinity United Methodist’s music and historic Victorian restoration programs.
