PORT ANGELES — Derek Brown has joined the First Federal senior management team as director of human resources.
Prior to this, Brown held the vice president/senior HR adviser position with Citibank, where he provided support for backend bank operations across the United States.
Brown’s primary responsibilities with First Fed will include the management and direction of the bank’s human resource activities; development and monitoring of lines of business, including commercial, mortgage and consumer lending; commercial and consumer deposit products and services; nondeposit investment product sales; and the business units supporting those lines of business in an equitable manner.
“We are very excited to welcome Derek and his wife, Dawn, to the area as he steps into the role of director,” said Jeff Davis, executive vice president and chief operations officer at First Fed.

Vets attend seminar
PORT ANGELES — Family Veterinary Clinic Drs. Carmen Czachor and Holly Irish recently attended a continuing education seminar about the latest evidence-based treatment protocols for cats with urinary blockage.
The lecture included information on treatment of this disease in an emergency and on prevention of recurrence.
Urinary blockage is common in male cats and can happen for a variety of reasons.

State award
PORT TOWNSEND — The Washington State Council on Aging has awarded its 2015 Excellence in Action Award to Ecumenical Christian Helping Hands Organization (ECHHO).
The award was presented Oct. 29 during the council’s annual meeting with Area Agency on Aging Advisory Councils at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma.
The award is given annually to organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to the well-being of seniors.
ECHHO is a nonprofit organization that works with volunteers and community organizations to provide transportation, chores, social support and medical equipment services to Jefferson County residents in order to help them continue to live independently.
ECHHO helps people of all ages in the community, but the majority of services are directed toward seniors.

Civics honors
OLYMPIA — Four Washington companies, including one in Port Angeles, have been selected as recipients of the 2015 Corporations for Communities award, which honors exceptional Washington businesses that make helping the community a priority.
First Federal Savings and Loan in Port Angeles and Seattle-based GlassyBaby are the two winners of the large-company category.
Heritage Distilling Co. in Gig Harbor and Spokane-based Peddlers Pond are receiving the small-company honors.
First Fed was nominated for “giving back to the regional communities from its Port Angeles branch,” according to a news release.
The company allots eight paid hours per employee per year for community service.
Secretary of State Kim Wyman will present the four companies with a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award during a ceremony in her office Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 1:30 p.m.
