Bike vs. van wreck in Port Angeles under investigation; driver said she took prescription medication

PORT ANGELES — The driver of a van that collided with a 12-year-old bicyclist in Port Angeles on Tuesday told police she had been taking a prescription medication, police said Thursday.

Mary Igo, 56, of Port Angeles, provided a voluntary blood sample after the wreck, Port Angeles Police Sgt. Glen Roggenbuck said.

A State Patrol investigator determined there was not sufficient probable cause for an arrest.

Roggenbuck declined to say what type of medicine Igo said she had been taking. The blood sample was taken to a state toxicology lab for analysis.

Igo told the Peninsula Daily News on Friday that the medication was antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory for arthritis.

Police have yet to interview the boy, who was believed to be recovering from his injuries at Olympic Medical Center on Thursday, Roggenbuck said.

“We’ll work with mom,” Roggenbuck said.

“When she thinks he’s up to it, then we’ll talk to him. Certainly, we’ll want to get his side of story,” he said.

Since police will not identify the boy, his status at OMC was not available.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of Eight Street and A Street at about 8:30 p.m.

Igo was driving westbound on Eighth Street and turned left onto A when her van collided with the child. The boy, who police identified as a Clallam County resident, was riding eastbound on Eighth.

Igo has not been cited.

“It may be a situation where this gets referred to the prosecutor’s office for charging,” Roggenbuck said.

The wreck closed the eastbound lane of West Eighth Street for about four hours, police said.
