Arts in Action visitors ask: What was that in Port Angeles Harbor?

PORT ANGELES — Hundreds of visitors to Arts in Action as well as many more looking out onto Port Angeles Harbor from the hills saw an unusual sight this morning.

A giant blue industrial-looking rig with two towers at about a 30-degree angle was brought into the harbor on a giant Crowley barge, then disappeared west down the Strait of Juan de Fuca later in the morning.

What was it?

Giant military guns?

Missile launchers?

Oil derricks?

Bingo! A the large barge was carrying oil-drilling equipment to Alaska.

Technically, it’s carrying only sections of an oil-drilling platforms to Alaska from Vancouver, Wash.

Crowley Maritime Corp. is moving the rig sections, which are headed to Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay. JH Kelly of Vancouver was part of a construction team building what the company says will be the most advanced mobile drill rig in the Alaska North Slope. This work over rig is owned and operated by Doyon Drilling and leased to BP LLC.

The lighthouse was built in 1878 when Congress approved $8,000 for the light and foghorns. Although the facility is still an active U.S. Coast Guard station, the equipment is monitored and operated remotely and no keepers are present. Regular tours on Saturdays and Sundays will resume in May. (Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
