Application deadline is Sept. 30 for Port Townsend School Board vacancy; selection to be made in October

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend School Board members plan to choose a temporary member next month to fill Anne Burkart’s position.

The board accepted Burkart’s resignation Monday night before scheduling the replacement process.

Applications are due Sept. 30.

Interviews are scheduled for a special meeting at 5 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Gael Stuart Building, 1610 Blaine St., with the new board member expected to be chosen at a regular meeting at 6 p.m. the same day.

The appointee will serve Burkart’s unexpired term through Dec. 30, 2015, and can run for election by the voters in November 2015.

Burkart will serve on the board during the process since her resignation takes effect Oct. 31.

Burkart, 71, resigned for personal reasons, saying she is returning to Orange County, Calif., to be closer to her family.

Her decision has to do with health problems suffered by her husband, Mike, and the sale of their house in Kala Point, she said.

“Health and other family and financial considerations make it necessary,” she said in her resignation letter.

She served for seven years on the board, having been elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2011, and is the longest-serving member of those now on the board.

The vacancy will be the second on the board this year.

In March, Nathanael O’Hara, a Port Townsend accountant, was selected to replace Bill LeMaster, who resigned for personal reasons.

Other current board members are Chairwoman Holley Carlson, Jennifer James-Wilson and Pam Daly.

Applicants for Burkart’s position must live in District 5, which has the largest geographical area of the districts.

It includes the southeast portion of the Port Townsend city limit, Kala Point, the area along Discovery Road and Discovery Bay.

The district also contains rural areas extending south almost to Tarboo Lake and about 3 miles west of Discovery Bay.

Advertisements for the position will appear in North Olympic Peninsula newspapers.

By today, a link to the application will be on the school district website at www.ptschools.org.

Completed applications, with attached resumes, can be hand-delivered or mailed to the superintendent’s office at 1610 Blaine St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
