PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society extended holiday cheer to man’s best friends on Christmas.
With a van loaded with bags of dog and cat food, Executive Director Scott Chandler and staff member Carol Lawrence made rounds to low-income neighborhoods around Port Angeles, delivering the bags to pet owners, on Thursday.
It’s the second consecutive year that the humane society has served as the pet food Santa.
Chandler said pet food was delivered to about 50 people.
Chandler said the intent of the deliveries is to provide assistance to people who may be stretching their dollars when it comes to their own meals.
“Folks out in the community need a little help, and their animals need a good meal,” he said.
“It helps folks get through the next week or so, so they don’t have to worry about buying a bag of dog food.”
Chandler said the humane society prefers to help people keep their animals whenever possible.
“We prefer, if we can, people keep animals at home rather than surrender them to us,” he said.
Chandler added that the humane society will do whatever it can to assist someone to keep their pets.
“We’re not going to judge folks,” he said.”We are really just trying to help the animals.”
Chandler said the deliveries were made possible by donations from local stores.
