PORT ANGELES — An 8-year-old child was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after a wreck on state Highway 112 near Elwha River Road today.
The wreck occurred at 3:33 p.m. at Highway 112 near Elwha River Road, two miles west of the junction with Highway 101, said Trooper Russ Winger, spokesman for the State Patrol.
The child was taken by ambulance to William R. Fairchild International Airport and then flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Fire Chief Sam Phillips of Clallam County Fire District No. 2.
No one else in the wreck appeared to be injured, Phillips said.
The fire chief did not identify anyone involved in the wreck because of department policy.
The child had been in a child safety seat prior to the collision, he said.
State Patrol troopers are investigating the wreck and more information will be released as it becomes available.
Initially traffic on Highway 112 was fully blocked, according to the state Department of Transportation. Alternating traffic was being allowed through one lane at 4:45 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the roadway was fully blocked with a detour in place, the state department said.
District No. 2 responded to the wreck with an ambulance, an engine company and eight firefighter-medics and emergency medical technicians.
Elwha Police and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
