PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a fugitive who has been sought by law enforcement for attempted murder for almost two weeks.
Mario Wayne Hackney, 45, of Port Angeles is wanted for investigation of first-degree attempted murder for firing a shotgun outside of a residence on the 200 block of Cameron Road near Port Angeles on Sept. 20.
Hackney was formally charged in absentia Thursday with attempted first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and a $1 million warrant is out for his arrest.
Law enforcement has had no contact with him since chase Sept. 23, Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said Monday.
“We continue to follow up on leads,” Peregrin said.
So far, none of the leads called in to the sheriff’s office has panned out he said.
But Peregrin believes it is only a matter of time before someone turns Hackney in, he surrenders, “or somebody somewhere is going to get lucky on a car stop.”
Hackney, who is also known by the name Don Lennon, is considered to be armed and dangerous.
He is 5-feet-9-inches tall, weighs 190 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.
He has extensive tattoos on both arms.
He may be driving a red Ford Explorer, which he does not own, Peregrin said.
Law enforcement also believe he may be wearing a wig and bandana to disguise his appearance.
According to court documents, the man Hackney is accused at shooting at had arrived at the residence to pick up a woman at about 11 a.m. Sept. 20.
She screamed at him to leave. Hackney shot at the pickup, hitting the windshield but missing the intended victim, with what looked like a shotgun, court documents said.
The man backed the pickup into a ditch, authorities said, and while running, he fell, injuring his hands, knees, elbows and chest.
Hackney, who also fled on foot, escaped a multi-agency dragnet by land and air that lasted until 8 p.m. on the day of the incident.
His white minivan was found at a residence two days later in Diamond Point, and authorities put a watch on the vehicle to see if he would return for it.
Sheriff’s deputies intercepted the Nissan Quest near Blyn around midnight on Sept. 23 and chased it about 4 miles up Woods Road, where it crashed into an embankment.
Hackney disappeared into the woods, and tracking dogs were unable to find him.
Hackney is prohibited from possessing or using firearms.
He has nine felony convictions for second-degree identity theft, drug possession, malicious mischief, possession of stolen property and second-degree burglaries, Sampson said.
