Vehicle snags power lines, knocks out power west of Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — More than 800 Clallam County Public Utility District customers lost power Tuesday when a building supply truck snagged utility lines west of Port Angeles, PUD officials said.

The boom truck hit the overhead lines at the corner of Eden Valley Road and state Highway 112 at about 1:05 p.m., said Chief Sam Phillips of Clallam County Fire District No. 2.

Power was restored to customers from Laird’s Corner to Joyce at 3:28 p.m., PUD spokesman Michael Howe said.

The truck was owned and operated by Pioneer Roofing Supply of Bremerton, Phillips said.

The crew had just delivered a load of roofing materials when the boom became entangled with the power lines, causing damage to a nearby utility pole.

Eden Valley Road and one lane of state Highway 112 were closed because of a danger to motorists with live wires on the ground, Phillips said.

The driver and one passenger remained inside the truck after the incident.

Fire District No. 2 responded with one medic unit, two command vehicles and a four-wheel-drive brush engine.

The Clallam County PUD responded with several units, including multiple pole trucks and supervisory personnel, Phillips said.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office established a clear area around the scene, Phillips said.
