SEQUIM –– With its appeal to retirees, there’s no mystery history’s greatest detective would look to end his career in the Dungeness Valley.
But like everything else in the career of Sherlock Holmes, retirement doesn’t come easy.
Olympic Theatre Art’s whodunnit production of “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure” finds Holmes headed for assisted living when called by the King of Bohemia, played by Carl Honore, to recover a photograph and foil a blackmail scheme.
Holmes can’t resist, and what ensues is a wild ride of intrigue and danger that promises to keep audiences guessing throughout.
Edwin Joseph Anderson III stars as the retiring detective, with assistance from Tom Darter’s Dr. Watson, in this semi-musical adaptation of the 1899 play by William Gilette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Along the way, Scotland Yard’s greatest mind clashes with longtime foe Professor Jim Moriarty (Keith Curtis) and finds romantic sparks with Nikki Adams’ opera singer Irene Adler.
Director Loren Johnson said the clear divisions of good and bad, along with Holmes’ use of his intellect, make Steven Dietz’s adaptation of this chapter of Holmes’ story appealing.
“Making bad people pay for the bad things they do — very unlike modern stories that are often filled with ambiguity,” Johnson said. “It’s fun to see people get caught.”
In addition to his role as Watson, Darter composed the score for the play, including an aria about Cleopatra for Adams’ Adler.
“Our outstanding cast have inhabited the Sherlock Holmes characters we love to love or hate,” said OTA chairwoman Heidi Hansen.
“Sherlock” will sleuth for the next three weeks at Sequim’s Olympic Theatre Arts.
The show starts up at 7:30 each Friday and Saturday night, today through July 26 and at 2 p.m. each Sunday through July 27. Tickets are $16 for general seating, $14 for active military and $10 for youth age 16 and younger.
