Volunteers start to add ornaments, glitter to Port Angeles’ Festival of Trees; 1977 Mustang one of the gifts awaiting tree auction

PORT ANGELES — Volunteers on Tuesday began decorating 61 trees, one of which carries a premium of a 1977 Mustang, to be featured during this weekend’s Festival of Trees.

Tickets are still available for events at the three-day festival that begins Friday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., said Bruce Skinner, director of the Olympic Medical Center Foundation which sponsors the fundraiser along with the Port Angeles Exchange Club.

As of Tuesday, 25 tickets were still available for the Festival of Trees Gala on Friday night, which costs $95 per person, as well as about 20 tickets, each $10, for the two Teddy Bear Teas earlier that day.

The capacity of the Teddy Bear Teas have been expanded this year, Skinner said, so that more than 500 can attend, making more tickets available.

Elaborately decorated Christmas trees and wreaths will fill the community center during the festival.

During the gala’s live auction Friday night, 36 trees decorated by volunteer designers will be auctioned.

Each tree comes with a number of presents, ranging from trips to televisions and other premiums.

Among the trees at the gala will be a tree celebrating 50 years of Ford Mustangs.

Designer Sherry Phillips of Sequim, the only designer to have designed a tree for all 24 years of the festival, has a 1977 Mustang with 49,000 miles which will go to the buyer of this year’s tree sponsored by Irwin Dental Center of Port Angeles.

Other trees’ premiums include a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, and a separate trip to Mexico, Skinner said.

“There are lots of good premiums this year,” he said.

Twelve additional trees will be raffled and won in a silent auction at Friday’s night’s gala, while two will be raffled at the Teddy Bar teas, five will be raffled at the all-class Port Angeles High School reunion and six are being sponsored by First Federal, which will buy them, Skinner said.
