Vietnam veterans to be honored before Lefties game Saturday

PORT ANGELES — The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Active and the Port Angeles Lefties are teaming up to honor Vietnam veterans in a ceremony preceding Saturday’s game.

“As part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s ‘12 x 12 Campaign’ for at least 12 units to honor 1,200 veterans in 12 months, we will be recognizing Vietnam veterans and giving each a lapel pin and certificate,” said Jennifer Runion, commander of the Active.

“We also have pins and certificates for the spouses of members who gave their lives during the Vietnam War,” she added.

Veterans who RSVP and their spouses will be given complimentary tickets to the game, courtesy of the Lefties, she said.

Those who want to participate are urged to RSVP by Friday at the latest to allow organizers to compile the roster and reserve tickets.

Participants are urged to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. ceremony. The game between the Lefties and the Yakima Valley Pippins will begin at 6:35 p.m. To RSVP, go to https://einvitations.afit.edu/inv/anim.cfm?i=406784&k=0661440E7353.

Veterans will be welcomed onto the field before the game, and the name of each will be announced over the public address system.

The Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Lapel Pin presentation is to give veterans some of the recognition and thanks for their service and sacrifice that they may not have received during that era, Runion said.
