Two-car wreck on state Highway 20 south of Port Townsend prompts one-hour detour

PORT TOWNSEND — A 21-year-old Port Townsend woman was taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital after her car struck the back of another car on state Highway 20 south of Port Townsend on Thursday, disrupting traffic briefly.

Law enforcement officers detoured traffic in both directions on Highway 20 into Glen Cove Industrial Park for about an hour after the 11:47 a.m. wreck until the highway was cleared.

Misty Marie McCleary received airbag burns to her arm and seat belt bruising after the 1997 Dodge Neon she was driving struck the rear of a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by 84-year-old Sequim resident, Eldon Fred Hill, the State Patrol said.

McCleary was taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend. Her condition was not available Thursday.

Hill reported a sore neck but was not taken to a hospital, the State Patrol said.

London R. McCleary, 2, who was secured in a child safety seat in McCleary’s car, was not injured, said both the State Patrol and East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, which helped at the scene.

But the child was taken to the hospital in Port Townsend as a precaution, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman.

The State Patrol gave this account:

McCleary’s vehicle was eastbound on Highway 20 approaching Seton Road when Hill’s vehicle yielded for a truck turning left into the industrial park.

McCleary collided with the back of Hill’s car.

McCleary was cited for failure to yield.

Hill’s vehicle sustained about $10,000 in damage, while McCleary’s was totally destroyed.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
