Two-car collision blocks U.S. Highway 101 for two hours

CARLSBORG — A two-car head-on collision Wednesday blocked both lanes of traffic on U.S. Highway 101 at Kitchen-Dick Road, with traffic diverted for a little more than two hours.

Three injured people were taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, but by Wednesday night, all three were listed in stable condition and were expected to be discharged, said spokeswoman Rhonda Curry.

The 1:27 p.m. wreck was at the highway’s intersection with Kitchen-Dick Road, about three miles west of Sequim.

Traffic was moving around the wreck on the highway shoulders, but both lanes were closed at about 2:15 p.m., and traffic was detoured onto Old Olympic Highway until about 4:30 p.m.

Jane Linden Matthews, 59, of Quilcene was driving a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero west on Highway 101 — with Robert W. Matthews, 54, also of Quilcene, in the front passenger seat — when her car drifted into the opposite lane, the State Patrol said in a written report.

Michael S. Hansen, 53, of Port Angeles, who was driving east on Highway 101 in a 1989 Dodge Raider, swerved left, attempting to avoid the Oldsmobile.

The two cars collided in the center of the two-lane portion of the highway.

Jane Matthews suffered back injuries. Robert Matthews’ had lower rib injuries.

Hansen’s chest, knee and nose were injured.

All three were wearing seatbelts.

The airbags deployed in the Oldsmobile, but not in the Dodge.

Both cars were completely wrecked, the State Patrol said.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation on Wednesday.

No drugs or alcohol were involved, the State Patrol said.
